How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

To measure your ring size at home, wrap a thin strip of paper or string around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure that length in millimetres — that’s your finger’s circumference. Match it to a ring size chart to find your size. For the most accurate result, measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest.

What You’ll Need

A thin strip of paper or a piece of string, a ruler marked in millimetres, a pen, and — ideally — a ring that already fits the right finger. No special tools required.

Method 1: Measure Your Finger

Cut a thin strip of paper about 10 cm long, or use a length of string. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to size — snug, not tight. Mark the spot where the paper overlaps itself, then lay it flat against your ruler and measure to the mark in millimetres. That number is your finger’s circumference. Match it to the chart below to find your ring size.

Method 2: Measure a Ring That Already Fits

If you have a ring that already fits the right finger, lay it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter — straight across the inside — in millimetres, then match that diameter to the chart. This is often the most reliable home method, and it’s the way to size a surprise gift without asking.

Ring Size Chart (Inside Diameter & Circumference)

Canada and the US share the same numeric ring-size scale. Find your measurement below (diameter measured straight across the inside of a ring; circumference measured around the finger):

Size 5 — 15.7 mm diameter / 49.3 mm around. Size 6 — 16.5 mm / 51.9 mm. Size 7 — 17.3 mm / 54.4 mm. Size 8 — 18.1 mm / 57.0 mm. Size 9 — 19.0 mm / 59.5 mm. Size 10 — 19.8 mm / 62.1 mm. Size 11 — 20.6 mm / 64.6 mm. Half sizes fall halfway between. If you land between two sizes, go with the larger.

Tips for an Accurate Measurement

Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their largest, and avoid measuring when you’re cold, as fingers shrink in the cold. Take the measurement two or three times and average the results. Remember that wide bands fit more snugly than thin ones — size up a quarter to half size for bands wider than about 6 mm. And mind your knuckle: if it’s noticeably larger than the base of your finger, size so the ring slides over the knuckle comfortably.

When to Get Professionally Sized

Home measuring is great for a ballpark or a surprise, but for an engagement ring — or any piece you want to fit perfectly — get sized in person. A jeweller uses a set of steel sizing rings to find your exact size in seconds, accounts for band width and knuckle, and it’s free. If your home measurement falls between sizes, that’s exactly when to confirm in person before you buy or order.
