How I Make a Custom Engagement Ring, Start to Finish

Designing a custom engagement ring with me is more personal than picking something out of a case — and it is usually easier than people expect. Here is exactly how it works at my bench in London, Ontario, from the first conversation to the day you pick it up.

We start with a conversation

It begins with a sit-down, in-store or by phone. You tell me about the person you are proposing to — their style, what they wear day to day, and anything they have hinted at. We talk through shapes, metals, and your budget honestly, so everything I design afterward fits what you actually want to spend. There is never any pressure to decide on the spot.

Choosing the diamond

As a GIA Graduate Gemologist, I will walk you through the 4Cs so you understand exactly what you are paying for and where your money makes the biggest visible difference. We will look at lab-grown and natural diamonds side by side — both are real diamonds — and I will give you my honest take on each so you can choose with confidence.

I design and build it on-site

Once we have settled on the look, I create the design — classic solitaire, halo, three-stone, vintage-inspired, or something entirely your own — and I build it right here in my own workshop. Because the work never leaves the store, I keep a close eye on every detail, and I can work in something meaningful: a hidden stone, an engraving, or even gold from an heirloom piece.

How long it takes

Most custom rings are ready in a couple of weeks, depending on the design and the stone. If you are working toward a specific date, tell me early and I will build the timeline around it.

Let’s design yours

If you are thinking about proposing, come in and let’s talk it through. There is no obligation — just an honest conversation with the person who will actually be making your ring.
