Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: What to Know Before You Choose an Engagement Ring
More couples in London, Ontario are asking the same question when they start designing an engagement ring: natural or lab-grown? It’s a good question, and the honest answer is that both are real diamonds. The difference is where they’re formed, not what they’re made of.
A lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment using processes that replicate the same conditions that form diamonds underground, just compressed into weeks instead of billions of years. Chemically, optically, and structurally, it’s the same material as a natural diamond: crystallized carbon. Lab-grown stones are graded using the same 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat weight) by the same gemological standards used for natural diamonds, and any reputable jeweller will disclose clearly which type you’re looking at.
Natural diamonds formed over enormous spans of geological time and were later mined and cut. For many people, that origin carries meaning on its own. For others, the priority is getting more size or clarity within their budget, which is where lab-grown stones tend to have an advantage, since they typically cost less per carat than a comparable natural stone.
Neither option is objectively better. They’re different paths to the same result: a diamond you’ll wear every day. What matters more, in our experience, is choosing a stone and setting that actually suit the person wearing it. A cushion cut wears differently day-to-day than an emerald cut, and a thin pave band feels different than a solid solitaire. These are the details that make a ring feel personal rather than generic.
When we work with a couple on a custom engagement ring, we walk through both natural and lab-grown options side by side, using the same grading standards and the same attention at the bench. Every stone we set comes with full transparency about its origin, and we’re glad to show you the difference under magnification so you can see it for yourself rather than take our word for it.
If you’re starting to think about an engagement ring, whether you already know exactly what you want or you’re still figuring it out, come in and we’ll walk through your options together. No pressure, just information.
